Aromatic 2a. Nitration of Benzene.

This video takes a condensed look at the nitration of benzene - considering its electrophilic substitution mechanism and laboratory preparation. First the nitrating mixture is prepared by carefully mixing concentrated sulphuric and nitric acids together. The benzene is then added very slowly ensuring that the temperature remains below 50 Celsius, so as to avoid multiple nitration of the ring.
