Dust Deputy Plumbing

I've had an Oneida Dust Deputy hooked up to my shop vac for some time, but the mounting system I used was pretty bad. Here I'm setting up a new system using PVC pipe and a plywood box.

Sorry about the dark video up front. Camera was severely fooled by all the snow outside! It clears up after a min or so.

I've been using a Dust Deputy for vacuum sanding drywall for several years. The drywall mud buckets are excellent for this application but it's a good idea to reinforce the lid. I sandwiched the lid with 2 pieces of 1/8" plexiglas then mounted the Deputy to that. I made a cart out of a child's stroller to get bigger wheels. The vacuum is mounted facing backwards. The inlet from the machine has a 90 elbow and the hose goes over top of the machine to the cyclone. The single pail lifts out of the cart for emptying. I use a filter and a bag and duct tape the seams of the bag to make it last much much longer.

Got mine today... gave it a test and yeah... very nice. Other thing is the hose from the tool to the Dust Deputy is nice and thick. I'm now looking at a PVC system to make it easier to use and swap out.

Thanks for taking the time to put together another thoughtful shop video. I'm still trying to decide between fixed and mobile for my Dust Deputy. Nice solution. I look forward to seeing how much air-flow you need to keep the vacuum from overheating if you go the sound insulation route. I watched your 20" Drill Press Set Up while I was unboxing and setting up my own 20" DP last week(grizzly version). Even though mine had instructions, you still helped me out a couple times.  Cheers.

Matt, great video. Thanks for sharing this. What dimensions are the plywood bottom and top?

Just an FYI, those rubber couplings do come in a reducer variation. i.e. 2" on one end and 1.5" on the opposing end. I don't recall what the male end of those Craftsman vac hoses are but I have used one of those rubber reducer couplings to connect my Ridgid vac to a less than compatible ROM sander.

Matt - not sure if you are still monitoring this video but how are you connecting the hose to the intake on the side of the DD?? What size hose are you using? I'm having a hell of a time finding a hose that will attach - they all seem to be right about the same diameter as the help, suggestions would be appreciated.  You did give me some good useflu information for connecting to the vacuum - Thanks

So you mentioned the height of the vac box, but what are the dimensions (L & W) of the top and bottom? Just trying to figure how much of a "footprint" that box takes up.

Thanks for the helpful video! Just a friendly tip… Maybe get rid of the noise gate on your audio. Or at least set the threshold lower and increase the release time/soft knee. The current effect of the gate is more distracting than the room's reverb. :)

Hi. Really liked the video as I was considering the bolt to vac option. You didn't mention anything about discharging static electricity. Has that been an issue?

Hey Matt, I see you've put a lot of effort into that. Do you use that as your primary dust collection over the larger on in the background?

you should put 2 or 3 inch casters on the bottom bucket, or make a cart for it to ride on behind the vacume!

Remember when you enclose the vacuum in the box to vent air to the vacuum motor or you will be replacing the vacuum.

What about putting the vac on the top shelf? If the vac was higher than the bucket you wouldn't have to have the vac suck things "up" the hose as much. Kind of like when you get a big object in the hose that won't go into the vac and just rattles in the hose, so you lift the open end of the hose up making it easier for the vac to ingest the item. Hope my rambling makes sense.

Why are you spending all of this time trying to modify a Wet/Dry vacuum to be a dust collector, when you have a dust collector in the background? I've been spending a bunch of time recently researching my first dust collection setup. I was looking at getting a Wet/Dry vac and modifying it with a Dust Deputy when I read something about using the right tool for the job instead of modifying a tool intended for something else?

As of right now my plan is to acquire a HF 2 HP Dust Collector, then modify/upgrade it as I go.

If I may offer some advice regarding youtube - the videos could be a LOT shorter, this might help with viewer numbers and people staying until the end. I'm not a pro, but i watch a lot :)
