Major design flaw in the new LEGO Star Wars UCS AT-AT? I don't think so.

The new LEGO 75313 UCS AT-AT is an awesome set, but according to some recent reports it has a big design flaw - some Technic assemblies cannot be taken apart without damaging the parts. Is it really the case? Let's find it out!

When it comes to UCS sets - since these are preimium products- there are two kinds of customers: those who never take it apart, and those who never build it in the first place. Only a few unlucky people will have to do away with it.

Unpopular design choice used here, interesting. I would personally just use a piece of stocky duct tape (like Gorilla tape), press it firmly onto the axle "head", and gently remove, hopefully taking the axle part out with it.

I had to resort to using a knife when I accidentally built something like this into a MOC, surprised to see it from LEGO

This proved an issue for me when I was building as I attached the grey piece to the wrong side of the gear and struggled to get it back apart, had to use a knife to pull if out like the first method you shown, took me a while to figure it out though

Interesting, and good to know for anyone intending to someday pull this thing apart. As for design flaws, the 2020 AT AT has serious ratchet issues after having only built it less than a year. It'll still stand, but forget posing it as I find it'll just collapse due to the weight.

For me this was a problem even though I never wanted to take the set apart: it is possible to make an error on page 89 of the manual, and put the technic frame on the WRONG side of the rotating disc. You'll only notice this when it's too late at the time of attaching the leg and trying the mechanism: the technic frame rotated loosely while it should be fixed to the disc. So, I had to look up this vid and in the end I used a blunt knife to take the rod out. Once put on the correct side the problem is solved. Took me half an hour of wtf-ing before I noticed the two tints of grey didn't match the figure on page 89.

Thanks for debunking this. It's what I also thought, that it's not an impossible task due to flexibility and axial freeplay.
What is your opinion on the ease of pulling out the new type of technic pin without side slots, Balázs?

Hard to find a set without such "traits" nowadays, especially in technic line... Either problems with too soft suspension (Bugatti), 50 shades of green (Lamborghini Sian) or use of parts with friction ridges where there should be the non-friction used (e.g. winch of Jeep Wrangler), huge flaw in Zetros (you showed how to fix it, @RacingBrick) and gear-eating and canceled Osprey...

I suggest a really easy solution not you to do but lego should just make the lip (top) of the axel bigger

Once in a moc I accidentally added parts that to this day is impossible to remove, it haunts my dreams

I highly doubt this was accidental. They wanted to make this build stable at all costs. Probably was the only way to do so.

You can use any needle to put axle out

I had the same problem with the UCS a-wing.

I had same mistake in my moc, but with servo motor, it is not as flexible as shown and i lost more time to pull it out

Any Lego blocks you have to push into holes in a set you recently opened is always almost impossible

I think Lego always was a mark that was based on creativity, that means, that you should be able to modify everything (deasamble the sets). Now, if you use a building technique like that one, that you can't really deasamble, for me, that means that Lego hasn't the creativity on first place anymore, and that's sad to see.

Nonissue, I think most adult builders could figure this out. If you're new to Lego may be a bit tricky.

LEGOs in 2000's is like the plastic model kits we built in the 1970s. When LEGO started making "kits" with instructions on how to build X, that's when the entire notion of "figure it out yourself" went out the window.

When I was a kid, I found a picture of the USS Kittyhawk in one of my dad's books and used damn near every LEGO block we had to build it, figuring it out myself. So I take these complaints about LEGOs with a grain of salt. Anyone interested in "free play" isn't buying a step-by-step set in the first place.

Actually not sure if fully impossible, since I did it, but the Bugatti had similar parts around and behind the middle dashboard. It took physical strength and stressing to get it out.
