I used to work there as a manager. The reason why they closed is that they had to keep prices very low and they did this by hiring salaried employees and worked them to death. We worked 12-hour days, 7 or sometimes even 8 days a week. If you worked less than 60 hours, they'd find a way to make the employee quit or get fired, usually by playing dirty tricks on theme. As to be expected, chronic high employee turnover is a death knell for an organization. Auchan's competitors in both Houston and Bridgeview gave the two Auchan stores a taste of their own medicine and drove them out. That's what you get for getting to aggressive with undercutting the competition and treating employees like slave labor. The closing of Auchan is what I'd call a true American success story!
