Apple is (kind of) a Game Company

Apple may not look like a gaming company, but they’re just a *different* kind of gaming company, and they’re poised to do even more.

I actually slightly disagree with the conclusion that Apple should just make a more powerful Apple TV with a different controller. Apple hates fragmentation for a reason:1. Game devs would have to decide if they want to develop a game with a proper controller/better graphics in mind, or if they want to support the limited apple TV remote for example.2. The Apple TV app store would be split into "pro" and "regular" apps, adding complexity.
3. It would introduce unnecessary choice for consumers during the purchase process. Do they want to take gaming seriously or do they just want Candy Crush? Where exactly is the cutoff point between the two models? Apple doesn't like to burden the user with such choice, because usually choice kills conversion (users get confused and just don't buy either).
4. Apple fundamentally doesn't believe it can trust users to properly understand what the difference between two similar looking devices is. Rightfully so. If it looks like an Apple TV and it's called an AppleTV, but doesn't play all the AppleTV games, then people will get upset. This was kind-of the problem with Windows RT. Looked like Windows, but didn't run classic Windows apps. 5. I can't think of two Apple products in one product category that use fundamentally different input methods. classic iPods = scrollwheel, iPhones/iPads = multitouch, Macs = mice/trackpads + keyboards. Not sure Apple TVs should be the first category to break that trend.I think they would do best if they replicated their iPhone strategy. Make one kick-ass all-round device for the device category. Promote (and support) it until everyone understands what it fundamentally does. Once it is established, add new versions, but don't break backwards compatibility and don't support two different input methods at once. What do you think?

5:47 there’s something missing in that train of thought.

People still wouldn’t buy controllers or even consoles if there are no great games on it.

Despite Apple making efforts on creating an easier development scene, it still means nothing if they don’t think like console companies do—which is to create & support first party games.

If the first party games succeed (ala Sony), then you’re guaranteed to bring some people on-board. Don’t think that others are going to stay silent about it though.

Well, as a software programmer, I must say that the size of the screen doesn't matter in-game/app development, 'cause we use a bunch of special layouts that adjust the size and position of the components in the game/app to fit your screen.

Making games for Android is just as easy as for iOS. Actually, most popular games are sharing the same code across devices, just compiled & wrapped differently. The power of frameworks.

This. Absolutely. The average person isn't much of a gamer and, if they are, they're mobile gamers.

1:59 And a huge part of that revenue is generated by microtransactions & lootboxes/gacha.

There’s a reason why people call mobile games as “not real games”. Although it’s true that it was used for comparing graphics in the past, but that’s mostly a moot point today—due to the growth of facilitating device limits to design styles.

(Hint: it has something to do with unregulated anti-consumer practices)
