The Game Boy Color - Still Fun in 2023?

The Game Boy Color was a beast of a handheld and released nearly 25 years ago. The Nintendo GameBoy Color featured a 160x144p screen that wasn't even backlit, making hard to defeat that final boss. It's amazing to see how far technology has progressed.

So many good memories with the game boy! Fun fact we thought the attached light was so cool we’d take it into the bathroom to play in total darkness.

I started playing my old gameboy color and Pokemon silver from 2000, 2 weeks ago. It’s still so much fun.

I had an atomic purple GBC when I was a kid that my dad gave me for Christmas, along with a bunch of games that he bought used. By this point in time, I think, the GBA was already out, or was just around the corner. Regardless, I used to play it all the time. I eventually got Pokemon Silver for it, and I would sink so much of my time into the game that my mother had to take it away more than once. Unfortunately I left it on the school bus one day, and never saw it again.

My dad did get me a yellow one with Pokemon Yellow later on. But I didn't play it as much. I wound up giving it away when I got an original DS for Christmas, which was a decision I regretted for years.

Fast forward about 15 years later, and I found a yellow GBC and a copy of Pokemon Yellow at a local Goodwill. Pretty sure I paid about $25 altogether for it back in 2019. The speaker on the GBC no longer worked, but headphones did. I figured I'd figure out how to fix it later. It then sat in a box for a couple more years before I actually did anything with it.

Now that yellow GBC is in a new black shell with a larger IPS display, new capacitors, new speaker, new red buttons, and a new voltage regulator. Oh and a flash cartridge for good measure. It's been great fun to use for Pokemon ROM hacks (Crystal Clear, or Red version but with G/S/C colors and sprites), new games (look up The Machine for Game Boy), and some older games that I may occasionally come across but have never played, or for reliving my childhood with Pokemon Crystal.

This is absolutely my favorite handheld of all time. My only issue with it is that I'm pushing 30, and I still find those older Pokemon games to be quite enjoyable. 😅

I adore my Game Boy Color, and it's still my go-to gaming device nearly all the time. One of the things I appreciate most is its simplicity - no need to create an account to start playing. Just pop in a new battery when it dies, and if you're fortunate, you'll have the wall adapter for endless play. But what truly captivates me is how enjoyable the games are on the Game Boy Color.

I had a Gameboy color here India in 1999.
I was the only guy in school to own that. My dad had got that for me from the US

I have my sister's Gameboy color. And really the only thing I would mod in the Gameboy is a front light. Everything else about the Gameboy is perfect to me.

Last year I upgraded my old GBC with a plug and play backlit screen, which is a bit smaller than the original screen but it's well worth it anyways. And I also got a SD-Flashcart for it, so that now I do use it regularly again.
2 AA high capacity rechargeable batteries keep it going for several hours, which is more than enough for all my playing needs.

That port on the side which you mentioned was for accessories was actually the system link port. You would connect it to your buddy's gameboy and play multiplayer.

The port on the side was for connecting to another GBC by cable and playing 2 player games. The accessories mostly just used the power pins.

I've got one, but playing it these days is a bit challenging because its really hard to see the screen. I'm considering modding it with a backlit screen, but first I need to learn how to solder.

I still have my translucent purple Gameboy Color. My first experience with the Gameboy was the original, my neighbor had it and I remember us playing with it while we were just kids in her sister's room a million years ago. I got the Gameboy Color for Christmas while I was still in the single digits and it was cutting edge technology.

Nintendo really made consoles to last in those days. My gameboy color still works despite all the wear and tear, it's just that the start button needs to be resoldered. It's a design pleasing to the hands.

I'm going to include the iPod touch but every single smartphone I've had has been heavier than the last sadly.

I had the teal GBC. I put so many hours into that thing, mostly playing Pokemon Blue, Yellow, and Silver. Pretty sure I still have all of that but I bet the save battery in the cartridge is long dead.
