Synthetic Division When the Divisor has a Coefficient that is NOT 1

If you have been using synthetic division, you may have come across a divisor that has a coefficient that is not equal to 1. In this video I will explain how to use synthetic division when the divisor has a coefficient that is not 1 so that you can continue using this amazing strategy instead of polynomial long division!
While polynomial long division will work when dividing a polynomial by a binomial when the coefficient is not 1, it ends up being long, complicated, and difficult process. Because of this, I always teach my students both polynomial long division and synthetic division.
But if you aren't careful, applying synthetic division as you normally do will lead to errors if the coefficient on the divisor is equal to 1!
In this video I will walk you through how to apply the synthetic division algorithm to divide a polynomial of degree 3 by a binomial divisor that has a coefficient that is not 1. Note that this example results in a remainder of that is NOT zero.
The trick here is to divide the coefficients of the polynomial by the coefficient of the divisor. My hope is that the example I show you in this video will help you master this process!
