No defeat for South Africa shall be bigger than what happened to them in 1999....they should have won the semifinal & the world cup...that was South Africa's best team of all time

Should be 8-9 for choke in 1999. 1 run with three balls remaining with the batter of the tournament on strike is the epitome of choking.

Jarrod: The parameters for this analysis are curse, choke and rain
Me: Sounds perfectly rational

I think 2007 t20 world cup deserves a mention. They had to chase a easy total of 150 something against India in the last of the super 8s. They didnt even need to chase it only a 126 would see them through on net run rate over NZ. But they failed to score that and ended up eliminated.

Not sure why 2015 is rated low on choke. There were simple catch drops and simple missed run outs which costed them the match. And those mistakes were done by one of their best fielders.

As a South African 1999 is the one that broke me. Why didn't Alan just run!

2015 was a proper choke. Just check the last 5-6 overs of the chase. Dropped catches, missed runouts (easy ones), misfields. SA just crumbled under pressure. It was an almighty choke

The 1999 was the saddest for sure... Klusner was peak of lower order batting at that time... But this proved the aussies were not the best team... But they know how to be neck to neck and get ahead in their times...

Without even watching the video, it has to be 1999. I am Indian and it still hurts

Indian here, i was just a kid then, but 1999 CWC, still remember Gibs "throwing" that catch away, Klusener's blitz innings and Donald's fumble in the end. That match is a core memory now. I was rooting so badly for the South Africa, I think i cried a little also.

everyone talks about South Africa being a choker and India being new chokers (not now though after their T20 wc win).

But no body talks about England which has lost 4 world cup finals.

As a South African: 1999 and 2015 haunts us... Its the ones that we look on and think was this a nightmare? What makes them worse is that you still don't know what would happen in the finals if we had made it. I still have PTSD flashbacks.

2003 and 2022 are ones that make you angry. They are ones that we just made stupid decisions and shot ourselves in the foot where we didn't need.

2024, I think is disappointing and a big choke, but it's also against the best side in the world, against the best white ball bowler we have ever seen. And, as you said, we had an unbalanced side. So while its a pain, it doesn't "hurt" as much as the others.

South Africa needs to get a head coach like Ricky ponting for the world cups. Someone who has the fortitude and know how to keep calm under pressure. That which he can instill in the players.
Losing from 30 of 30 was nothing short of a tragedy.
If South Africa had played smartly maybe sent Rabada up the order to hit a few boundaries it would have released some pressure. How can you go from 30 of 30 to 16 off 6.
1999 they would have reached the finals
But 2024 they would have won the world cup. That's the closest they had got of winning a world cup.

This analysis is even more amazing when you realize it's coming from Lance Klusener himself.

For 2015, I would rate 'rain' as a lot higher. There was a very high chance that AB de Villiers would have taken SA to 400 and beyond.

Why was 2023 WC Semi not included?

Top 4 collapse, saved by Klaasen and Miller, and they had Australia 7 down.

That's atleast 20 on the overall scale imo.

Strong competition with 1992, 99, 2015 and now 2024, south africa really has tough luck

You missed 2002 Champions Trophy Semi Final. Gibbs was pasting the Indian attack all over the park. They are massively in front & end up losing from there. That was a massive choke.

Of course dunno why 2000 KC, 2007 CWC etc. have been left out

2011, Curse should be at least 5. Hashim Amla was batting the best he ever did. If you look at his dismissal in the game, Amla plays the ball with soft hands and it hits the wicket-keeper's (McCullum then) shoe and bounces very high in the air for the slip to take it. To me, that was the moment RSA lost that game.

Also, the 2015 one should have more points for choke. Simply because of their fielding in the game.

You left 2007 t20 World Cup.. SA clocked to win against India… from top of the table in the group to just going out in same match
