Time for a final verdict: ID vs UX! Which one do you like better? Do you like being able to feel and touch a physical product? Or the fast-paced and fluid development in UX?

UX is really the overarching of many of fields. It’s not a separate entity from ID. UX is a methodology, it’s a way of prioritizing the experience of the user first. The thing that changes is the deliverable. Whether it’s a product, service, brand experience, digital interface. I came from an ID background and currently work in UX. I’m planning to move into more hybrid roles. There will be a market in the future for it. You should look into system thinking for ID/UX

Thanks for the takeaways! It was awesome seeing how your experience at Georgia Tech, and ArtCenter allowed you to post a comprehensive video of a breakdown between the two.

You guys think is possible to switch career from UX to ID? Usually people ask the reverse question but I'm trying to start a career in UX and I'd love to keep options open and explore Design 360

hi justeen, right now im studying ID in germany but i also want to focus on UX. what i understood from other channels and videos was that UX also physical was. What i really want to do is to design product but focus on the ergonomy and make them more user friendly. I want to do benchmarks and field tests and than design the product which is better than the other varieties. i hope i explained it well. so can you advice me what i can do while studying or after graduating ? great video btw :)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You know what? Recently I started my career as a hardware UX designer. I made an offer for this position to my current company and It was accepted. I majored in mechanical engineering and design engineering. I also have an interest in giving a better user experience through physical interface/interaction. But you know, as you mentioned in your video and comments, "UX" is being used only for the digital world even though its origin concept covers both the digital and the physical. I also agree that UX is too broad to define specific positions such as "UX + something". It's causing too many misunderstandings and confusion. That's why I'm still figuring out what Hardware UX is, and what I can contribute as a hardware UX designer in my current company. On the other hand, I think "Hardware UX" is still an emerging field. I can see Google is opening a position named "UX Researcher, Hardware" and Meta or other companies are working on exploring AR/XR devices for better experiences. I want to keep following your thoughts on this topic. Thank you :)

Interesting, I graduated to Art Center College of Des and been an ID for 8 yrs, including a Sr ID for 2. Then an ID Manager and Design Studio Manager for ID and Graphic Designers for 10 yrs now. Worked on many projects for different customers like Disney, HBO, AT&T, Time Warner, Nokia I'm now going to do a career change to UX/UI. I personally don't feel long term ID will be the way to go career wise in the future. I know many ID who constantly get stuck at the Sr. Level and never progress beyond there because of a lack of positions for ID beyond Sr level. The career growth is capped, the future is not as exciting in this field as VR/AR, there are honestly far fewer jobs and growth opportunities in ID.

Do you think A.I will replace a lot of UI and Ux designers, because their seems to be a lot of logic within these fields?

hey justeen, im actually an undergraduate ID student at GT trying to go into UX so this video was super relevant! I actually didn't know about UX before coming to Tech and there's not that many opportunities within ID (unless you have any recommendations?) so i've been trying to do projects on my own. another great video!

Can we combine both ID and UX/UI design??

ID will become the new architect: hardwork and long time commitment, low reward. Dont be an industrial designer now, not worth it.
