I had a wonderful RT as a patient in 2014 and he definitely made my stay less miserable. Every time he came to give me an iloprost treatment he would ask if I was ready to "get the smoke" and was always making me laugh. After getting off the vent, when I was just on a nasal cannula in the ICU before moving to a regular floor he even arranged to wheel me out of the ICU and outside around the block so I could see and sit out in the first sunlight in weeks after being in a windowless room even though he probably risked getting fired lmao. He would even come to check on me while I was learning how to walk again. Dude spent way more time than me than any of the physicians in charge of my care. Dr's saved my life but I don't remember anything about them; I only saw them on rounds and for like 45 seconds. RT saved my life as well and I will never forget that dude because he made me feel better and treated me like a human not a case. That's some cool ass power you can have on someone else's life!

I'm not sure how I missed this video but I have a feeling I will be revisiting this often. Thank you for selflessly sharing your knowledge and craft with the masses.

The voice we all need. 90% of RTs are the preceptor you described. Thanks for speaking up. Our profession needs more leaders and voices like you.

My professors tell us the same thing. I am graduating this year (a few weeks!!!) Also and they remind us all the time to change the culture and not to be average. You are truly amazing and your videos have helped me so much!! Thank you for your lessons and your encouraging words!!!

I feel your frustration. We are often put in the position of choosing between keeping our jobs or doing what’s right for the patient. We go home at night, or in the morning wondering whether we left someone on a treatment. Or should we have woke up a post-operative patient at 3am for albuterol and incentive spirometry, as ordered, when they haven’t slept in days and finally got to sleep. Will our employer back us for that judgment call, or are they only worried about billing that patient? Or did we fail to see the signs of a patient going South in the ICU, and did we make the right recommendations to our physicians and did we work hard enough to articulate those recommendations or just cave and back down when they wouldn’t listen. Did we listen and try to learn when we gave the wrong answer and someone else corrected us, or did we double-down and get mad out of pride? If you ever struggled with any of this, then you are a practicing Respiratory Therapist, and you are in the right place, and you are needed. Don’t let the self-doubt crush your soul.

I really appreciate the advice for the new graduates. Not all of us are old and outdated and jaded we do have to contend with administrators who demand stats and who demand billable procedures we do our best using the resources we have and sometimes in order to treat the majority of patients there are corners that have to be cut it's just a simple fact of life that you have a limited amount of resources and they're simply not going to give you the employees that you need to do 100% of everything on everybody we do the best we can in an imperfect world but those of us that have been working for a few years in this field still get up every morning with a little hope and a little faith that this field will progress and things will be okay and we will evolve from the 02 jockey that we used to be into a respiratory care practitioner that the next generation ultimately, will have to become.

Thank you coach.
I made it through the hardest semester (the 2nd) so far with the help of your videos, next year by this time I will be an RRT. Your warning is real, during clinical rotation, so many times I've heard, we need to learn the real word way and just know the theory-based for the NRBC exam.
We are more than that!!!

Ohh goodness! That was deep. Thankyou for giving us a piece of your heart. Video should be played at every pinning ceremony💪🏽I know we can make a culture shift! It may not be popular or the new normal, when everyone is looking to cut corners: understaffed and overwhelm.

It’s a choice and I choose to be a hang nail to anyone that wants to clock in & out because It is all about the patient💛🌻

Can you talk about P100, I don’t believe I was exposed to that in my academic circus. Academic circus as the RT program was a hot mess …..but I survived, sadly that may be the truth for many students. Where academic advisors only see a tuition and the goal is not to produce critical thinkers all around RCP…..but then we have you! Buckets & buckets of gratitude❣️
