Just make sure to wash it all off afterwards. Salt and acid will destroy any progress you've made if left anywhere on the ferrous surfaces.

After removing all the surface rust a coat of anything to keep the rust away goes a long way to keep the rust from coming back. If you don't have any rust preventative, any robust wax will help protect it. You could use cooking oils, but they go rancid and are messy/gummy after sometime. If all you have is a candle (paraffin is okay, but beeswax and soy blends are great) and a hairdryer you're golden.

A ball of aluminum foil works pretty well too. I used that to clean up my own second hand bike :)

If no lemons on hand, use reg. vinegar w/salt. Rinse well afterwards, regardless whats used.

If it's chrome, just use 0000 steel wool and a soft cloth to wipe away the dust after.
I've been detailing vehicles for 15+ years and it's literally the easiest method out there.

Lemon or white vinegar with baking soda and rust bye bye.. ball foil.
