Making a hydraulic press

The ovaled cylinder; obviously I would weld the flanges to cylinder BEFORE assembling the frame, the problem here was that I couldnt get access to weld the flanges all round the cylinder so just welded the sides where I could reach. This shrunk those opposing sides which pulled the cylinder into an oval shape. obviously the solution is to weld the flanges to the cylinder BEFORE assembling the frame, Lesson learned!

Love the thumbnail. Hoodrolic press channel is a favorite of mine

I really appreciate the fact that you show your mistakes and then repair them - but even more than that, that you go through the process and pitfalls of building this press and then first thing you decide to do is break random stuff with it. My inner 13 year old says "much respect"

i didnt know hydraulic presses actually had practical uses. thats amazing!

...for a couple days I thought I was seeing a recommendation for a video from the hoodrolic press channel, until I read the thumbnail proclaiming that it *wasn't* a video from the hoodrolic press channel.

Ha, that is me @8:35 a grinder and paint makes you the welder you ain't! Good on ya man, that's way better than I can.

All that marvellous engineering and I am sat here shocked at how well you transferred that paint to the smaller tin. 😂

Great press. Brave man welding and grinding in a wood shop!

The tight spot on the cylinder bore was caused by shrinkage from welding. You needed to order a cylinder wit a front flange for mounting and avoid welding the cylinder. Every time the piston goes past that tight spot it will damage your seals.

Rapidly becoming my favourite Yorkshireman! I don't know any others but yeah, definitely!

0:34 “both projects need laser cut steel…” Am I the only person who expected the next frame to read, “So I built a laser.” ??

superb design for the press, expensive but nice

Well done.
My suggestion would be a replaceable shoe(s) to protect the end of the ram (and of course form tools)

Love your unflappable "just fix it" northern demeanour when things go wrong .
A rare thing .

Is there ANYTHING that you cannot do? I thought that I was reasonably multi skilled, but I am not even in the same universe as you. Really enjoy watching your various projects and learning as I do.
Thank you.

this is why you fill the barrel full of oil before welding on it, i make cylinders all the time. also when fixing a crack in the weld were it leaked, youcant just grind it out an weld it even if it looks like a pin hole, you have to drill a small hole on each end clean it out really good with brake clean from inside out, if you dont drill it will keep cracking farther and the oil if not cleaned never welds good and do not repair with mig welder use stick welding with 7018 3/32

I commend you for showing the mistakes. It makes the video a valuable tool for learning. For dimension critical parts I recommend either doing the final machining after welding (which probably wasn't feasible for this particular project), or designing a mechanical method for fixing the hydraulic cylinder to the press structure.
That aside, the project result was very nice. This press will render many years of useful service.
Thanks for sharing your work.

The way you tell a story visually is the best I've seen, on what could be considered, by some, pretty dry content. I'm completley hooked and look forward to the next project. How did you get so good? a true craftsman for me it's a joy to watch.

Great video again but welding in a wood work shop that shouts out major fire risks to me I couldn't sleep at night knowing that one of them little sparks ended up on a dry wood pile
