I remember reading this when I was younger and I was really obsessed with the idea of one of the characters who had communication cards. I got hyper fixated on doing a project where I created my own binder and hand made all of these little cards. I didn’t actually use them and pretty soon I forgot about it but knowing I’m neurodivergent now I’m looking back is so ironic.

I remember my fourth grade teacher read it to the class. For some reason I didn't remember the main character's brother was autistic (just that he had some disability) and at the time was annoyed by his character. I don't remember how or why I discovered the book again and that the character was autistic, but I started rereading it again to see how my first experience with autism in media went. This time I found the character more relatable than I had before (which I guess I didn't at all and nobody in the class including the teacher did either) while still understanding the main character's perspective.

The book wasn't the worst depiction of autism out there but the plot was super confusing. I'm not saying the representation was great imo but it wasn't truly offensive either. Aka most of my other issues have nothing to do with the autism part
