In 1777, Quamino Dolly was charged with treason for allegedly assisting the British forces. During his trial, he argued that as a slave, he was not a citizen and therefore could not be guilty of treason against the state. Despite this defense, he was found guilty. However, instead of being executed, he was sentenced to be returned to his master, who was ordered to sell him out of the state.

In 1859, John Anthony Copeland Jr., a free Black man, participated in John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, an attempt to initiate an armed slave revolt. Copeland was captured and charged with treason against the state of Virginia. During his trial, Copeland argued that as a Black man and not a citizen, he could not be guilty of treason against a state in which he had no rights or citizenship. Despite this argument, he was convicted and sentenced to death. He was hanged on December 16, 1859.

Love, love, LOVE how that slave turned slavery back on his abusers and used it to help himself! 🙌
And it's just so logical! You can't (or shouldn't be able to) claim a person doesn't have the same rights as you* and then turn around and hold them to the same responsibilities as yourselves!
I'm honestly a bit shocked that he was successful with that claim when nothing else regarding slavery had any resemblance to logic and slaves weren't really listened to... But it I'm so glad this was an exception! 👌

*Obviously I don't think any person is superior to anybody else, we are all equal and should be treated as such.

I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger! A guy opens his door and gets shot and you think that of me? No. I am the one who knocks!

Could you imagine that slave argued his case and the state was like “good point, you’re free now, your tree time is 3pm tomorrow, see ya👋”

I live, literally, round the corner of where Colin Pitchfork murdered one of his victims. We called it “black pad”.
