One year I noticed while listening to certain classical music that the work I was listening to rigorously held to only three main elements through the entire ballet. Now the elements were often shared by multiple instruments (e.g. layers), and elements could be tossed from one instrument group to another. It's some of my favorite music of all time - this is not a new rule. I called it "the rule of three".
