Sesame Street was created with the specific goal of helping to educate young, poor, black children in inner cities. The creators noticed that children who had a preschool education had much better outcomes in life, and poor black children were a lot less likely to go to quality preschools and were therefore less likely to be successful in later school years. The show was created to help fill in the education gaps created by the lack of a preschool education. Once it became a huge success that was loved by children of all races and socioeconomic classes, the creators realized that the show could also offer positive and important messages that a lot of children might not receive at home. Your lifestyle and situation don't matter- if your kid has watched Sesame Street, they have a preschool education and a lot more. They know what autism is and they know how to talk to someone who has it. They know about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. They know about wheelchairs and how important it is to be careful and respectful around those who use them. They know that some people have family members who are in prison, and it's important to be nice to them and remind them that it's going to be okay. They know that skin color doesn't matter and girls and boys are equal. They know that sometimes people don't speak a lot of English and that's okay. They know that you should love yourself no matter what you look like.
The show is AWESOME. It's done a lot of kids a lot of good.

That’s a good way to teach kids. Kids don’t like it when you lecture them, they’re natural rebels, so telling them that it’s cool and rebellious to be anti racist definitely does the job
