Whenever you’re running an old car for the first time in a long time. Fuel, spark, air. Every component in those systems has to be fresh. Fuel tank must be clean, fuel lines must be sound, fuel pump must be operational, the diaphragm in a fuel pump, will go bad if it sits too long, especially with ethanol fuel. replacing all points, cap, rotor, and spark plugs with wires is essential. And making sure there are no rats nests in your intake manifold is a good thing.

Ever use your window washer tank as a fuel tank and fuel pump?

1984 corvette fuel filter before the fuel pump protects the fuel pump check valves from sediment that prevent the pump from building and holding pressure to the carb. When the engine gets hot the fuel in the line to the carb and in the fuel pump turn to vapor pushing liquid fuel back to the tank.. vapor lock described.
The 84 vette filter is 10 micron. Install it. Disconnect the fuel line to the carb. Disconnect the ign to prevent spark. Crank for 15 seconds. Do 15 seconds cranking 3 times. Reconnect carb and ignition. Enjoy your cruise.

I learned the hard way not to drive with a fuel leak.

Fuel dripping on headers was my situation, but even onto a hot motor or near the coil is cause for concern...then again, this is roadkill, it if ain't leaking, it ain't running.

Your problem is that it's not a Dodge

The highest priority should be to stop the fuel from leaking from the carburetor.

But these old cars once you think you got it fixed leave it running outside for 2 hours if it stays running you won't have any problems on the road. 📡👽🇺🇸 RUN!!!
