Crash Analysis: How Did Coco Change?

Inspired by Miharu's analysis videos of Spyro characters, I wanted to take a crack at analyzing Crash characters, and who better to start with than Crash's little sis, Coco? She's been in many games since her debut, but how did we get from sunspot-haired PS1 Coco to cute, nerdy PS5 Coco? Join me as we discuss Coco's evolution, and I hope you enjoy!

He's always seemed like one of the most interesting characters in the series to me. His on-and-off rivalry with Cortex. Going from subserviant to maniacal and obsessive. He's definitely not as black-and-white as most of the other villains in the series.

Easily one of my favorite videogame girls alongside Kasumi, Ayane, Hitomi, Mai Shiranui, Chun-Li, etc.

I think that Coco Bandicoot is a great character and a good companion to Crash Bandicoot. She really knows how to hack computers and also makes her own games. Imagine a fully fledged 3D platformer game made by Coco Bandicoot herself.

Coco is my favorite from the Crash series.

She was always a teenager, Vicki winters confirmed she’s around 12 years old in Crash 2.
There’s no proof that she’s aged in CNK, this is a myth that fans ran with. She’s the same age as before just in a new outfit.

I still think the remakes were the best balance for Coco, and they do it solely by her gameplay animations. By default she's more showy and composed than the goofy Crash, but most of the animations she is losing control or in a bad situation, she's panicking or losing her temper (in the 'Didn't get the gem' screen she THROWS A TANTRUM AT YOU). Basically the ND era straight man Coco when winning and the Radical era silly pissbaby Coco when losing.

It makes a fun contrast to Crash who is dopier but more even tempered even when being dumped on by the universe around him. He'll get chopped in half and just look confused. Coco is smarter and arguably more talented but can't take looking stupid or being part of the cartoon antics, unless she's doing it willingly with her brother on her own terms, which maintains the cute bond they have. She doesn't have to worry about her dignity around him.

I don't like how Crash 4 took out that temper weakspot, even with way more story and animations, she's just down to the composed 'better than Crash' girlboss side to her, which makes her and Crash's dynamic WAY less interesting and broad and just demotes the main character to a comic relief loser (but I suppose that's ALSO changing her with the times :P). I liked Coco could be a fallible little brat sometimes, it made her more funny and sympathetic, that she's the straight man and genius girl, but still has obvious almost buffoonish flaws and wasn't 100% superior to her calmer brother, she is still a petty little sibling that always has to win. In fact NO ONE in Crash 4/Rumble really has dynamic personality like that anymore, even with all the animations they have. It was a fun part to the cast, see the 'winner' and 'loser' animations for the CTR podiums. Everyone had dual sides to their personality, now, despite Toys For Bob bragging about 'developing' and 'improving' the Crash universe, they all just have ONE

A small oversite that always bugged me a tiny bit: Mind over Mutant forgetting to have coco in the cutscenes post-boss. At least I think she has a quip about about the dangers of recycling when you enter the junkyard (It's in the game files either way).



Also like the majority of the game's writing, she's rather bland in Crash 4, sue me.

Coco is my favorite character, but I loved her a lot when she wore a cute midriff shirt and jeans. I always wished I could play as her platforming on foot with that attire. But I only ever played as her wearing overalls. I'm just sick of seeing her in her overalls. She she may look cute that way, but when I was young I loved Coco in Nitro kart, Tag team racing, and the Titans games. I never got to play as Coco in Mind over Mutant because I had a Playstation 2 and she wasn't playable in that. And I've been requesting that cool Coco outfit for CTR nitro fueled. But it got scrapped, and it never came back for Crash 4 and Rumble. I just hope someday in the future Crash games I'll get to play as Coco in her cute shirt and pants again. And it will be my childhood dream come true to play as her in that way. Please no more overalls.
