The wand Grindelwald wields is actually the Elder Wand! It was one of three magical objects that made up the fabled Deathly Hallows, along with the Resurrection Stone and the Cloak of Invisibility, which was a huge plot point in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie. In the Harry Potter universe, it was the first Hallow created, supposedly made by Death himself. In fact, the Elder Wand was the most powerful wand in existence. A person who owned that wand could have used it to cast spells more powerful than any believed to be magically possible.

Wasn't this covered in the Harry Potter books because Dumbledore won it from Grindlewald, Draco won it from Dumbledore, and Harry won it from Draco. Harry got rid of the wand in hopes of it dying with him
