Slavery actually existed in Colombia. Many indigenous people were enslaved but also many Africans were used as slaves, they worked endlessly on plantations and minery, Some of them escaped and they became what you would call ‘cimarrones’ and formed their own autonomous communities known as ‘Palenques’. Today afrocolombians make up 10%-20% of the population, but unfortunately many of them are segregated from the rest of the population and they live in the rural & coastal areas. But there are around 1 million of them living in Bogotá & Cali
