Ok all, sorry but here are the facts. No the US did not use the British version of the Sherman called a firefly armed with a British 17pdr gun, the US instead opted for a 76 mm gun on the Sherman model M4A3E8. The long barrel 76mm on this variant could easily penetrate a tigers or panthers armor ( tiger 100mm not sloped at front), and with HVAP ammo could penetrate up to 157mm. Unfortunately the Sherman only had 50mm of frontal armor so was vulnerable.
The M4A3E8 Sherman used a ford v8 petrol engine producing 500hp. German tanks such as the tiger and panther also used petrol engines made by Maybach. German tanks such as the tiger and panther were great but were unreliable mechanically, due to weight and due to being rushed into service. the Sherman was reliable and had the advantage of great numerical superiority, just like the Russians and their T34s.
The red and green tracer rounds enabled the firer to see the rounds fall of shot, germans used green we used red. I spent 27 years in the Australian army some of it in tanks, leopard AS1. Hope this helps the obviously confused. BTW tankers on both sides showed great skill and bravery, so lets not question that.

At least the American tanks got to the battle and weren't broken down on the side of the road due to over complicated fuel injection systems. And much easier to manufacture, only a little over 1000 tiger tanks to some 60, 000 Russian t34. More to a tank than a big gun
