Flanged....
For the opponent's displeasure.

A side benefit is that, similar to sword's fuller, it reduces the weight of the head while maintaining the same approximate radius.

I love them flanges, it makes the mace look extra cool

I love how he looks so unassuming, but he knows at least a dozen ways to gut you with every single implement.

Robin you would probably serve as an excellent medieval squire for a lord

A third function is preventing over penetration, so you can retain your weapon for more mashing. A warhammer beak can get stuck.

The flanges are what distinguishes a club's bonk from a mace's crack

Also the flanges reduce weight while keeping the same size which lets you has BIGGA MACE

plus, if a single flange hits, then the glancing-effect will immediately place a second flange 'on', ie, now two, flanges on the plate, rather than a 'single' simply glancing-off, upon initial impact; ie, the multiple flanges create a momentary delay, tending to transfer most of the impact upon each blow

There's another one: it doesn't overpenetate like an axe would (at least when it comes to an unarmoured skull)

They also look pretty and add a bit of style to the piece.

I like to imagine this man in the middle ages giving lessons on his weapons before using them

cleats, kinda like the rough grooves cut into a framing hammer so it doesn't slip on the smooth surface of a nail

Informative, clearly presented vid. It is unexpectedly soothing

I never thought about either of these problems, let alone how the design fixes them

Huh, didn’t know that. I mean it looks logically plausible that it would help, so no wrong in the reasoning there, I guess I just never considered that second functionality. The more you know!

Thank you Robin for that interesting fact and indirectly giving me some insight on my own thought process. Very cool

Also they remove material from the head compared to a solid sphere of the same circumference, so less mass. Kinetic energy is calculated by 1/2mass x (velocity x velocity). less mass means you can swing it faster, so having more speed is more effective at increasing the strengh of the blow compared to more weight, with the addition of the flanges concentrating the force into a smaller area.

I mean, the reason cleats function is that they concentrate force allowing them to pierce into a material, providing a sturdier connection than a flat surface to surface connection. So I'd say these are really, in effect, the same benefit.

Some people really just don't understand what a heavy piece of metal can do if wielded by the right hands, this fine work will easily smash through a hippo skull if you swing it hard enough.

You forgot the third; looking cool as fuck
