Using MRI, researchers recorded in real-time what happens inside a joint when it cracks. The joint separation was associated with rapid creation of a gas-filled cavity within the synovial fluid, a slippery substance that lubricates the joints. Rapid cavity inception at the time of joint separation may cause the popping sound heard.

I want to see a back crack. Mine pops like 15 times. Would be satisfying.

Is it understood or are there any theories as to why this produces a feeling of intense euphoria or release when done for example on the joints in the back?

Which gas is it and from where it gets injected in the cavity?
