Hong Kong action pioneer Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and martial arts superstar Jackie Chan burst onto the scene in 1978 with a one-two punch of kung fu masterpieces, and it was the second of these, Drunken Master, with its Keatonesque slapstick and flawlessly choreographed fight scenes that would leave the biggest impact.

Jackie Chan plays Wong Fei-hung (a legendary Chinese folk hero who has also been portrayed on screen by Jet Li, Gordon Liu and Donnie Yen amongst many others), who is punished for his frequent troublemaking by being forced to study under the martial arts master Su Hua Chi (Yuen Siu-tien), notorious for his drinking as much as he is for leaving his students crippled. Wong proves himself an adept pupil, but his new skills are soon put to the test when his own father is targeted by a brutal assassin (Hwang Jang Lee, Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow).

Frequently ranked as one of the greatest martial arts films of all time, Drunken Master revolutionised modern action cinema, and the Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK in a new Dual-Format edition.

I got this edition today! I can confirm that the DVD is region 0 and the Blu-ray is region ABC.

It's funny that when they advertise the "complete Cantonese audio soundtrack", it's the Mandarin version in this trailer at the 1:13 mark. For purists, this version from Masters of Cinema will probably have some issues that will prevent it from being the most definitive version. The opening fight sequence will probably have English credits rather than the original HK credits (same case for the Japan bluray). The English dub (as heard from this trailer) will probably the same one released on the Sony DVD years ago rather than the alternative English dub that many people are used to. Anyway, only when it gets released will we see the final product.

Eureka needs too remaster drunken master again, the only thing I like is the art work of the cover.. shocking, there is No slipcover, no lobby cards, no booklet. Definite the sadness part is the original English dub from golden harvest is missing.. Eureka has re-release Once upon time in China trilogy.. I hope Eureka does the same towards drunken master? If not than 88 Films will have the rights to do so by asking Jackie Chan.☺

One of the Eight Drunken Immortals that Fei-Hung imitates is "Lu, the drunkard with inner strength". A mythological character that Jackie eventually plays in The Forbidden Kingdom (2008).

The Made In Hong Kong VHS English dub is the definitive dubbed version. Can't stand the new dubs.Proper Cantonese dub is okay. Need a commentary from Bey, Big Mike or Rick and Toby!
