99% of people are extremely unaware of how air diplomacy works. The US intercepting Russian nuclear bombers is NORMAL. It's a game of chicken Russia has been playing with us since the beginning of the Cold War. They bring nuclear bombers up to Alaska's airspace border, we send jets to intercept. They turn back because they don't want a crew being shot down. We don't aggress because escalation over a known bluff is pointless and it's good practice anyways. Why these incidents are outrageous is because the wake of a turbojet at such speeds can destabilize an aircraft behind it and going within a few meters of another jet has high risks of a crash even when they're elite pilots and directly communicating and coordinating; Ramstein air show being one of the most famous instances of this occurring.
