I know that when we switched to books with more complex, rich language, it was a difficult transition for my children. We ended up having to make the transitions in the car as audiobooks. When they couldn't get away from the book, the ended up listening, and it really drew them in. Once they were really into a story, we could bring it to the couch or the after meals (though I won't argue that keeping their hands busy with coloring or handicrafts or something is absolutely essential). Even my 2 and 4 year olds sat through A Little Princess, The secret Garden, and the entire Narnia and Little House series along with my older kids by doing it this way!

I sometimes read books to my kids that you might consider "unworthy" where the kids act up etc. We use them as opportunities to discuss how the people in the books are acting and if we should act that way or say those things.

Is there a book list for read alouds for the Pre-K and K ages? I looked at y'all's booklist but it seems to be geared towards books the child reads themselves so I am curious about books that are read to them. Specifically books they will actually enjoy, can understand and aren't too taxing on their limited ability to focus for longer periods of time.
