You gotta understand the industry. At that point, DiCaprio was already an academy award nominated actor that was hitting home run after home run in every film he did. Most people in his position don’t test or read for things they do. Kate Winslet didn’t have the reputation he had at the point. So he was probably thrown off when James Cameron told him he had to test. I get James Cameron’s view because the budget and pressure were so much and he had to be 100% sure the role was right. And he also felt that it DiCaprio wasn’t willing to test that this film wouldn’t be for him because the shoot was going to be 6-12 months.
