Sir you are a star, I have had the MS170 Stihl version for many years. Recently it has been a pig to start or not start at all > fuel mixture was correct so only left ignition. Thanks to your video I stripped down the machine as far as checking the coil and gap. Although I had never touched it the gap was nearly non existant how it worked before beats me. After cleaning up the coil from gunk I reset the gap to .009 " as you suggested and reassembled. Couple of cord pulls and it started.
I can't thank you enough for your excellent video

I find that a brass feeler gauge works pretty well also to set your gap. Nice video by the way. Thanks.

A coil Can fire and still be bad. That said, you just about gotta have the PET 9000 ignition analyzer to tell whether or not the ignition timing portion of the coil is working or not

That small twin hole spacer under the coil is typically a thermal bridge to reduce the heat from the cylinder from migrating into the coil and it’s electronics… yes the fasteners do act as sinks buy less than a direct placement…

question about your using a spark tester, why don't you just remove the spark plug and check the spark on it ? you merely need to connect the same as you did with tester.
