If you no longer trust VPN companies - and I completely understand why you wouldn't - there are some VPN alternatives that are worth trying. They may not be as fast and some of them are slightly more difficult to set up, but thankfully almost all of these options are free. So basically, it's like a free VPN, only better!

Stingrays (often deployed at large venues) makes hotspot/tethering substantionally less safe than if you could be certain you were connecte directly to a genuine cell tower, but the phones do not know. Stingrays greatly reduce security to all connected devices, perhaps as badly as general public wifi spots. Even if you are not connected through a stingray, I trust the cellular companies no more than any other of the large isps (very little).

One privacy step that could be mentioned here is using a custom DNS instead of using your ISP. It’s a free and easy step that makes a difference for privacy.

When you use Mysterium VPN you have to save a file on a usb inorder to get your account back if you decide to factory reset your computer but nobody will tell you that, your just left to think that the seed phrase is what can get the account back but it isn't.

I liked your presentation which I found was balanced. You called out cheapskates. Being proactive is wise; being paranoid is not.

Connecting via your phone requires trusting your phone data provider - this is the same level of risk as trusting a VPN provider or a home ISP. Networks in cafes/airports etc. are notoriously filled with adverts. The technologies that support advert delivery and advert content themselves present a risk - for example in fingerprinting devices by tracking across sites. There are also security limitations in the technologies themselves sometimes.

If you go with a VPN, make sure it is not based in a "Five Eyes", "Nine Eyes", or "Fourteen Eyes" country, or it could by law be required to save info for the government.
The five best countries for your privacy VPN base would be Switzerland: Federal Data Protection Act, Panama: Law 81 of March 26th, 2019, Malaysia: Personal Data Protection Act, Romania: General Data Protection Regulation, British Virgin Islands: Strict Judicial Codes.
(Express VPN is based in the British Virgin Islands. NORD VPN is based in Panama. Both great.)

Thank you I really love your channel information. I can't wait for next week's video just on every step of setting up your own private VPN. I've been wanting to do this for years with my standalone raid Nas box data storage hub.

Tip : Android phone can share internet over the charging cable by connect your phone to computer USB port and turn on "USB tethering" on Android. This way your don't have to worries about your hotspot password or visible to anyone on same area. It's also charge your phone too. 😁😁

I like the idea of a personal VPN, not for safe browsing, but for being able to grab files off my NAS etc, as if I was home, without copying heaps of stuff onto dropbox etc, just in case I needed access.

How do you determine as a consumer whether a VPN is actually no-logs or not? Before they have been caught handing off customers' data
