When The Bough Breaks is gorgeous, and I love how Euclid on the new album calls back to it ("this bough has broken through, / I must be someone new")

Found them mid release of their debut album Sundowning, but after the first song i wanted my second song to be rather more obscure exposure and heard ‘Jericho’ from their TWO EP and immediately fell in love. Have been my favorite band since 2019 because they blend everything i could want. It’s super immersive with a sexy, eerie, ethereal ambience that i always loved the early days of The Weeknd for, and The Weeknd himself said he was influenced by Deftones in those particular early projects (who are in ny top 3 bands of all time). So you mix The Weeknd and Deftones together with a more djentier tone and also with a little bit of a more soulful Bastille, you get this masterclass of a band who are my absolute favorites.

When the Bough Breaks is one of my favorites of theirs. The built is incredible. Trance-like, jazzy, right into heavy while remaining melodic. (Anyone notice the floor creak between the first and second verses in that song?).

In terms of adjectives that describe the mood for each album/era:

One & Two: Dark
Sundowning: Longing
Tomb: Forlorn
Eden: Acceptance

In each, however, the sound is still quintessentially Sleep Token.

I have been following sleep token since the first single got released in 2016, to be nothing has changed they have just gotten better at what they want to do and managed to make the package better with every new release.

Sleep Token's songs are healing to the soul. The music is so atmospheric that it feels like the song surrounds you. The lyrics create a whole other world and the emotion, beauty, power and fragility in Vessel's voice just sucks you in. I drive to a bigger city for concerts 2 hours away and I have to be careful driving back in the dark with Sleep Token on cause I trance a good thing to do at 75 mph. 😂

I agree, Geebz! The variety of textures that we hear on Take Me Back to Eden have been present throughout their discography. I think the main distinction in this recent album is that they are more aggressively blending the sounds and genres together in single songs, which is pretty exciting to listen to!

I'm very excited that metal music has taken this direction to incorporate new ambient sounds and even pop elements into the heaviness. It sounds so fresh and inspired! Other bands like Dayseeker, Spiritbox and Bad Omens have been doing this as well, but to me Sleep Token is the pinnacle of this newer sound (at least for now!).

Oh boy geebz, I was just arguing on Facebook earlier about if they're technical or not, and it really seems like we're on the same wavelength when it comes to what makes this band so intricate. Here's a little excerpt where you actually do a better job explaining it in this video. Much love brother.

Their work is a lot more focused progressions in melody and atmosphere than just playing in different time signatures ( which is something kids in school learn how to do and isn't really that impressive tbh ). It's not that they just bend genres but they are the first to create the space where it can exist and actually sound cohesive and not something like oh our song sounded like this now all of a sudden it sounds like this. They have created their own music world within atmosphere.

2:40 - I hear Brad Roberts from Crash Test Dummies in Vessel's voice. Especially "Mmm mmm mmm mmm" (LOL), that track and how Roberts sounds matches up almost perfectly IMO with Vessel in Ascensionism.

I’ve honestly thought a lot about this particular topic. “What is it about Sleep Token that resonates so deeply with me?” And this is the answer I’ve come up with. It’s their intent.

They are not the first band that has fused genres. We’ve seen rap/country, hip-hip/pop, R&B and metal, and so on. And in almost every case, it feels very deliberate. The intent of Linkin Park, for example, was to fuse rap and metal and they did that expertly.

Sleep Token, on the other hand, feels more like the intent is to destroy the notion of genre. To transcend it. It really is about creating art which makes it feel much less deliberate, and a bit more organic. For me, that’s truly inspiring, and that’s why I’m obsessed at the moment.

4:37 that's what pulled me in with The Summoning. I'm new to the heavier parts of metal, so that part of the song didn't initially do it for me, but the slower middle part, especially the ending, was so good. My best friend is more into heavier metal and he loved the heavy part of the song and the contrast.

They’re brilliant. The music is all one guy and a phenomenal drummer. Just incredible.

I’m with you: ‘When the Bough Breaks’ (along with the other pre-‘Sundowning’ songs) is where it’s at for me. Much darker, proggier vibe. But his singing and those drums are always great, regardless of if I happen to personally connect with a particular song or not.

I've always been confused by people that only like one type of music, I've always loved all kinds of music and my favorite is when a band mixes genres in a successful way. Sleep Token is amazing at mixing genres and I love all of the music they make.
