The concept for ‘Is It Really You?’ stemmed from an anonymous short
story we had stumbled across long before the initial process for the
record had begun. The band Loathe has said of this song: The basis
revolves around a recurring dream which takes place in an idyllic
setting of relevance, surrounded by passersby. You exist within the
dream, night after night - until a change occurs, from the crowd a voice
softly asks “Is it really you?”. The phrase struck such a chord within
us that we held onto it for almost a year before it realized itself.

What used to be a very dark and sad song for me, has now turned into a song of recollection and happiness. In June of 2024 I was going through a very rough breakup with my first ever real true love. After the breakup I was in a very deep spot and found myself considering suicide. I listened to this song while going 95mph trying to find something to crash into. I couldn’t do it. I was a wreck. I finally sought out help and got the help I needed. Now I come back to this song every now and then to see how far I’ve come and it never fails to fill me with happiness looking back vs where I’m at today. This song will always hold a place in my heart. Thank you sleep token and loathe. If you need help. Seek it. It’s okay to not be okay. 🙌

Loathe continues to defy the traditional expectations of what bands can and can't release. I'm incredibly inspired and motivated by what this band and SharpTone Records do. I'd love to earn the ability to be an American artist on the roster.

In late August of 2018, I found out that a dear friend of mine from middle school had passed away earlier that year, in April. He had taken his own life. He was fifteen.

Oftentimes, I'm asked by friends who have also lost loved ones, "When will it stop hurting?" and my answer is, while a bit grim, always the same.

The truth is, it doesn't. The hurt may ebb and flow atimes, but in truth, the grief process never ends. It's not a five step program that you can just get through and move on with your life. Once you start grieving, you never really stop. But you do learn to live with the grief and the hurt, and that empty hole in your chest that was carved out the day you lost them. And some days are better than others.

But then again, some days are worse than others.

It's been a little over four years now since he passed, but I still see him. Occasionally, when I'm out in public, I'll swear to every God above that I saw him, if only for a moment. And some nights, I have those very vivid dreams that he's still alive, that his death was all just a cruel joke. Those are the dreams that, when I wake up from them, my heart shatters just like it did the day I found out. But in those dreams, I always ask the same thing, one simple question:

"Is it really you?"
