Global National: July 14, 2024 | Biden orders review of failed Trump assassination attempt

On tonight’s top story: We are learning more about the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. Trump was injured in the attack, which killed one spectator and injured two others. The gunman was also killed. On Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden ordered an independent review of security measures leading up to the attack – and appealed for unity. Global’s Jeff Semple is in Pennsylvania where the attack happened.

In the wake of Saturday’s shocking events, there are now more questions about how the Republican National Convention (RNC) will unfold as it kicks off Monday in Milwaukee, Tenn. Despite the attempt on his life, Trump has arrived in the city ahead of the convention. Delegates are expected to crown him as the official Republican candidate but Saturday’s attack will certainly have a major impact on the event. Global’s Washington Bureau Chief Jackson Proskow reports.

The U.S. Secret Service is under scrutiny over the apparent security lapse at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania. Global’s Mackenzie Gray looks at how it unfolded and the questions now being asked.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among those to condemn the attack on the former president. World leaders of all stripes shared their condemnations on Sunday, but the tone and focus of those statements has differed widely depending on their political leanings. Redmond Shannon reports.
