Use MDF for the shelf. You can finish it the same as drywall (corner beads, etc) but its alot more durable.

Looks clean, when the shelf breaks (not if, when) you can replace it with the plywood you took out originally and just paint it white. Also lol at 2x4 supports then using sheetrock.

I'm not sure if was best to use drywall for the actual shelves because they won't hold much weight if you ever want to use the shelves to store books or something like that, but you did a great job! They look good!

Looks great, only thing i could think to add is using plywood shelf first then drywall piece on top for the smooth top layer. Now you have the added strength but the look you after, if bottom wood can be seen just do drywall bottom cover piece. Nobody would know there is stronger plywood in there.

I agree with others you need a MDF for things to sit on. But you did a really great job of it all. I had my doubts when you started but it looks well lush. Great work 👍

You did a nice job. Unless you pile up a bunch of stuff, you've lost 2 of 5 shelvs. You could have edged & faced everything with fancy moulding, saving time & $$. On rhe other hand, you've upgraded your skills. Always a plus.
