12 CREE XT-E "Cool White" LED stars come together with a bit of sweat and luck to create a marvelous fixture for a planted aquascape.

The fixture is powered by an Inventronics 40W 750mA Dimmable Driver connected to a 1/2 Watt 10,000K Potentiometer. 60 degree optics focus the light into the tank. The final product is strong enough and elegant enough for a professional looking planted aquascape.

Awesome. I love DIY for the customization factor but it's sometimes hard to beat the ease of going with a commercial product.
Congrats on getting your first video up. That's awesome! You'll learn video editing quickly and find what works for you the best. It's a fun process! Best of luck!

Thanks. It was a fun, rewarding, and relatively simple build. It went together much more easily than I expected.

I am actually quite surprised with how bright these guys are. It's incredible! I hope the price of them can drop down a bit but I do think that in the near future LEDs will become very popular.

Thanks! The build turned out great. I'm glad I was able to have this opportunity.

They are very bright. I wish I had a PAR meter to actually measure the flux of light hitting the substrate but the tank seems very brightly illuminated. It's a good spectrum too so we will see.

Not stupid :) Just answered in the video. The project cost around $150 but you all helped me get $100 off. I also got an extra 5% discount because they sent me a coupon. I had everything in the cart but was making some final decisions and they gave me a bit of a bonus to convince me to buy :) Fine with me

RapidLED is another one of hte LED suppliers. I haven't worked with them so I can't give you much input there. A reef tank would require a bit extra. You would probably want to get a multi channel driver or a couple of drivers to run some exotic LEDs for color. You can get some cool mixes with all that.

We're all constantly learning. We can't help it :)

Looks good, I was looking at this company or rapid led for a 29 reef lighting setup, this cleared up some questions. Good job, makes that tank look really cool

There are optics attached to the LED stars that focus the light into a narrower beam. They act just like a reflector.

You need to get some reflector or each side on the inside of the canopy

Really nice job. I love LEDs. I bought a premade solution, but mine doesn't dim :( And I finally posted my first YouTube video today. I've been watching you guys for months and finally got around to doing it. I really enjoy your videos and it would love to get some feedback if you have a few minutes to watch. I hope to learn some basic video editing, but I need to get a few videos up first. Thanks!
