The Godmother Of Drumming Plays 'What's My Age Again?'

Dorothea Taylor’s version of Blink-182’s classic track “What’s My Age Again” is the perfect bird-flip for anyone who thinks you need to be a fresh-faced 20 year old to be a drummer.

One reason why this song is perfect for Dorothea is how Travis Barker uses rudiments in the intro (Dorothea is the rudiment queen). Barker was a marching drummer in school and it’s cool how he incorporated that training into his drum parts. Flams, five stroke rolls, pataflaflas…who would’ve thought you’d ever hear these in punk rock drumming?

“You’re never too old or too young to start playing drums,” says Dorothea. As a testament to this, she’s officially challenging Travis Barker to a drum battle. Think we can make it happen?

(P.S. If you catch someone judging too many books by their cover, share this video with them)

I'm a 63 year old lady and just bought my first practice pad and sticks. You are so inspirational. Been a piano player so here's to a new instrument. Cheers

I love how she wastes zero energy in her movements...it looks like she is moving really slow but she flies around the kit in precise bursts that surprise me and make me smile.

Dorothea is my inspiration. Because of her, I a 53 year old woman picked up drumming. For the last year, I have been taking lessons weekly, and I have my own kit I play almost daily! Love her so much!

She is so great. She is so focused and isnt trying to look cool, she is just serving the music. True professional.

Her face looks like she wants to file a noise complaint on herself while she plays lol. I love this lady, she’s such a badass!! She blows my mind every time I come across her vids, especially her cover of down with the sickness

Every rock band is missing a golden opportunity to bring this woman on stage for one of their bangers. The crowd would go nuts!

When I was about 12, I used to take lessons from this awesome drummer! She took me to a drum demo to see Tony Royster Jr. At a music store called McFaddens in myrtle Beach SC. It was the single most inspirational thing to happen within my life of drumming. I'm 34 now and still feel the same passion! Thanks Dorothea for helping to light that fire in me. 😊

Dorothea Taylor is such a pro. As a bass player, there is "economy in motion" which is to use minimal movement for maximum results and Dorothea is a master of that. She is such a solid, pro drummer.

This amazing woman makes me not feel so silly having finally picked up the sticks at age 48! Never too old to play! Thanks for sharing!

Love the improvised fill right at the end. Great example of how to cover a track.

I would like to say this lady really rocks. She is an inspiration to all of us older women drum players. I am 55 and just started about 4 years ago. In between some surgeries I've had I Learned by watching YouTube videos. Let's give it up for the rockin grandma's out there!!!
