Exploring the Hubble eXtreme Deep Field Image
Показать описание
Background story of the XDF image: An international team gathered together ten years worth of observational data collected by the Hubble Space Telescope. They focused on a very small patch of sky that is roughly one tenth the apparent size of the moon. Many months were spent refining and combining more than 2,000 individual images, representing more than 20 days or about 2 million seconds of exposures.
The result is magnificent. It contains roughly 5,500 galaxies of every shape, size and age. The earliest of these is seen as it was 13.2 billion years ago. That's just a half-billion years after the beginning of the known universe. Many of these starry communities are great spirals like Andromeda or our own Milky Way. Others are ancient ellipticals, full of aged red-giant stars.
