Saving Honey Bees: Dragonfly Figurine vs. Giant Hornets

In this video, we conduct an intriguing experiment to see if a dragonfly figurine can save honey bees from the relentless attacks of giant hornets. The golden-ringed dragonfly is a formidable predator in Japan, and we've modeled a figurine after it to test its effectiveness as a decoy. Watch as we place the figurine near a struggling colony of Japanese honey bees and observe the hornets' reactions.

Perhaps if you equipped the dragon fly decoy with an auto-targeting 40 mm anti-aircraft cannon it would be more effective?

I love dragonflies dude, one of the few insects I've never had beef with. Not only do they fly gracefully with total control and make no noise, but are also a predator against wasps? These guys just keep getting cooler.

Dragon flys are awesome, I remember as a kid I was riding my bike and HUGE bluish dragon fly flew down infront of me in the same direction I was going, It was as if I was flying along side of him, I will NEVER forget that.

Dragonflies and hornets aside, the person recording is brave as heck for getting that close to bees and hornets

The bee at 2:34 who grabbed the leg of its pal to pull them back to safety. That’s actually so sweet.

The wasps sure are cautious, so they definitely recognize the figurine, but as long as there isn't a negative reinforcement, they'll eventually lose their fear to it (maybe electrify it so the wasps die on contact?)

Something to remember is that most insects perceive the world through their sense of smell, so if you could somehow manage to make the figurine to smell like a dragonfly, it would be more effective... or perhaps just spread the dragonfly scent around)

The dragonfly probably looks like a corpse to them. It looks like easy food, hence their interest.

What if you made a dragonfly figurine and put a tiny bit of electrical current going through it? That way is the hornets touched the dragonfly that’s electric it’ll zap them. Good luck.

Vespids in general are pretty smart and have good eyesight. So while they may recognize the dragonfly the fact its not moving or even resisting their attacks tells them its dead most likely
