I Bought a Suspiciously Cheap PS5 SLIM...

So Best Buy was already selling "open box" (basically used) PS5s at the same exact time new ones were available on release date?? And then to make things even weirder, they had this open box "fair" PS5 available for purchase, for almost $100 off, 2 days after launch. So you know I had to buy it...

I have two theories on the immediate open box. Either the box was damaged in some way (box itself or seal), or Best Buy was getting ready to set up display consoles and opened too many.

The second one might have had a broken seal or something on the box. It's a common thing where I live that if the seal is broken it's not allowed to be sold as "new" even if it has never been used. Or maybe something hit the box and they had to check the insides and that caused the seal to be broken.

Whoever returned it just wanted the game code.

I bet that's why they returned it. They stole the code for the game then returned the PS5.

Someone I know did this. Bought the PS5. Took the game returned. Got money back and a free game. It's actually common

It’s common for managers to open box items that were beat up in shipping. I’m guessing that’s what the second system is

I was thinking about it while watching and I’m more than certain it could have just be shipping errors or issues in the receiving departments. At any point it could have got damaged before reaching the store or shelf. So “opened box” could just mean the console was fine but the package was messed up.

general rule for me buying any refurb is that the discount needs to be really good. I would not take a chance on anything for only saving like 25 bucks. If they get too many returns they might start getting better refurb deals for these things.
So I would keep an eye out for open box specials at all the places that offer them cause you know the good deals are going to be out there but you gotta be quick to get them so good luck fam.

I just got mine today checking into best buy. It was originally $414 without the game. I was able to get them down lower with the usb cable and the stand missing. With all said and done i paid 375 total.

I work at Walmart, not Best Buys, but assuming things are somewhat similar the box for the second console was most likely damaged or opened in someway in transit. They would then be completely opened to see if anything inside was damaged and if not it would be sold as open box.

I think Best Buy itself brought PS5 slim and resold the system themselves.

You know the slim is gonna suck when there’s already open box copy in stock three days after it released

Maybe the slip cover(s) are used for display/POS purposes (or advertising reasons)? It could be that they are taken out of the packaging, photographed (for the website?) and then put back into the packaging to be resold; albeit as open box without the packaging? Just a thought? (The console would have been in store a short while before actual release date, after all, and the publicity materials would need to be prepared? Maybe there was an embargo on this before hand. It could explain a few of these issues?). Just saying.

Somebody bought it reviewed it and returned it, like quantum tv allegedly does with tvs.

I live in the UK and normally for staff training the staff are allowed to take home or have a staff training days with new consoles so they know what they are selling at launch so that will be why the have open boxed ps5 and why the free game will be gone on one and not on others

I bought a PS5 spiderman bundle last week then 2 days later, the stores released the same bundle in the slim model. I bought the slim version and returned the 1st one but I did leave the unused game code inside the box. Chances are employees take it or whoever bought it keeps it as well.
Point is in my case, I returned a brand new 2 day old PS5 because of the slim version being released.

Hey ! Man I used to work for BB and also have bought a series x like that it usually happens when someone buys it and then returns it (basictly mom gets mad with kids for grades ect.) they return it and they charge the 40$ packaging fee to them and they have to sell it open box (missing game, cords, ect) and since it not excellent they have to put the fair tag!!!

When i worked at bestbuy the manager allowed us to set up new game counsols in the lunch room for the employees, however if the consol became low stock or no stock they would return it back to the store inventory as openbox or refurbed.

My best guess for the second PS5 is that it was used to actually test the console before release. It did have good box packaging, a week before release, and looked in like new condition.

I don't work for BestBuy but the sticker is for itemizing, interact/video definitely stands for interactive Video game console or something of that sorts, and PNext Hardware means Playstation next generation hardware its just a sticker that gives the item a description for employees to know where they can find it whether in store or in database
