Residents feel isolated with no power or phones in Asheville, North Carolina after historic flooding

People in Asheville say they feel isolated after Helene swept through the area.

I’m an NC native and though my area of residency was in the hot spot for Helene, the amount of devastation Asheville and neighboring mountain areas have experienced is horrifying. Students in universities are being airlifted out and are starving because they’re trapped in mountainous areas. They have no way to reach out because the cell towers are down and outages are so wide spread. I work with adolescents with disabilities and our sister clinic in Asheville was demolished. It has been so sad to see the upheaval and distress caused by this storm, it’s truly heartbreaking the effects this is having on the psyches of NC residents

Edit: Asheville is a huge hub for music and I was so happy to hear her mention members of the community coming together to support one another with food, music, and shared camaraderie. Keeping the hope alive, contributing what we have available to help each other, and holding space for one another during this disaster helps immensely

There are so many towns torn up, completely destroyed. It will take a very long time to get the basics back up and running for the people that still have homes, much less all the other stuff the people that lost eveything are going to have to go thru. I have never seen anything like this in my life!?! Lots of my favorite places, and even my own hometown, all destroyed. Who would have thought that one storm that started in the Gulf of FL could come all the many places it did, and do so much destruction!?! This is wild to witness. Many where I am at have been without power or water for days, that is if they even have a home standing.... and we just got notice that is very likely the whole county is going to be shut off from water for a couple of weeks. Just pray for all across the southeast folks. Everyone needs it. And help if you can.

And according to CNBC less than one percent of those affected have insurance that will cover a flood - this is a serious catastrophe. And these people are 2, 000-foot above sea level. You wouldn't think of a hurricane doing this kinda damage so far inland.

This is horrible, it’s like being set back to the horse and carriage days. What really sucks is they can’t get power trucks up in there with the roads being washed out, oh and the port workers are going on strike at midnight, how will that affect supplies these people might need? Some of them have nothing but the shirts on their backs. 😢

Please! If there any rescue crews reading this, knock door to door in the Haw Creek area. There are lots of elderly folks who can’t walk up roads through downed trees and power lines. They are desperate need of water and food. Please. I was there for three days and got no help or knew anything until I found a little Am radio and found out about areas and distribution. But if you don’t have a car or knowledge of this important information you’re screwed. Please go to Haw Creek area near the elementary school. Please 🙏🏽

What happened to the Abby Hamm I use to know and see? She was the sweetest, purdiest young lady on the news! This doesn’t look like her and it breaks my heart. I don’t mean this in a bad way. All that matters is her happiness! She was just so naturally beautiful. Like stunningly beautiful.I hope she wasn’t pressured by her professional career to get aesthetic work done. That’s like someone suggesting that graffiti be put on the Mona Lisa. All that matters is that she’s happy with herself. Nobody else’s opinion matters and it’s none of my business to be frank. I just don’t want young ladies to be pressured by the industry to make changes to who they are just for their career.All that being said, I’m happy to see her doing well and doing what she loves.
