You probably know from anime and movies that Japanese people especially love cherry blossoms. It is even our national flower.
Among all the beautiful flowers that exist, why this one though?
There are mainly two reasons:
1. The bloom at the beginning of the fiscal year
In ancient times, the blooming of cherry blossoms was when peasants started growing new crops of the year. The peasants would foresee the harvesting of crops and prepare for sowing rice according to how the cherry blossoms bloom.
Even today, spring is the beginning of the new term for schools and workplaces in Japan, and people get the courage and motivation to throw themselves into a new environment by seeing the cherry blossoms in full bloom.
2. They are symbols of life and death
Cherry blossoms bloom beautifully and wither very quickly which represents the fragility of life. The best time to see them doesn’t even last for half a month; possibly even just a few days.
This reflects the Japanese virtue of life and death that derived from religions like Buddhism and Shintoism, how we believe that something is beautiful because it has an end.
*The content is based on personal studies and experience
There is no intention of denying other theories and cultural aspects
