Why Japan is Obsessed with Cherry Blossoms #Shorts

You probably know from anime and movies that Japanese people especially love cherry blossoms. It is even our national flower.

Among all the beautiful flowers that exist, why this one though?

There are mainly two reasons:

1. The bloom at the beginning of the fiscal year

In ancient times, the blooming of cherry blossoms was when peasants started growing new crops of the year. The peasants would foresee the harvesting of crops and prepare for sowing rice according to how the cherry blossoms bloom.

Even today, spring is the beginning of the new term for schools and workplaces in Japan, and people get the courage and motivation to throw themselves into a new environment by seeing the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

2. They are symbols of life and death

Cherry blossoms bloom beautifully and wither very quickly which represents the fragility of life. The best time to see them doesn’t even last for half a month; possibly even just a few days.

This reflects the Japanese virtue of life and death that derived from religions like Buddhism and Shintoism, how we believe that something is beautiful because it has an end.

"how we believe that something is beautiful because it has an end." Such an indescribably beautiful yet inseparably tearful truth...

The perfect blossom is a rare thing, you could spend your life looking for one and it would not be a wasted life

I remember the annual cherry blossom festival in Boston. The trees were a gift from Japan. The custom began when Japan sent cherry trees to Washington DC in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the People of the United States from the People of Japan.

I really love Japan’s philosophy of finding beauty in ephemeral things.

Yukio Ozaki, former mayor of Tokyo, gifted some of these cherry trees to the United States in 1912. They're prominently displayed in Washington DC. I've been fortunate enough to see them, but it was when I was a teenager. I'd love to see them as an adult.

Seeing something as beautiful because it has an end... Well considering how Cherry blossoms are seen and what they represent for lots of people, makes sense, but still, Cherry blossoms are beautiful on their own!

I really like Sakura trees. When I was little, I was thinking about having some by my house and see them bloom.

"Something is beautiful because it has an end" Now it makes sense that in many anime scenes with cherry blossoms the characters are leaving or beginning something

My father actually named me Sakura cuz I was born on the first day of March, which is the month when Sakura trees start blooming. It's pretty perfect too since our last name means 'mountain rice paddy' and there's somehow a history between farmers and Sakura blooming.
