I have a bubble chart with more than 90 categories, so that would be looking very close which labels go where.

Man, thank you for your effort, but I can't believe how Microsoft can't add something so simple as this, which is a feature I bet lots of people use.

Also, if you have a few bubbles (different sizes) that happen to be stacked on top of each other. Therefore, only the largest bubble is visible, while the smaller bubbles are "hidden" underneath. Solution: Change the order of the series/data points, so that the smaller bubble gets plotted "after" the larger bubble

I also happened to not have activated the "Developer tab" in Excel which is required to run the macro. An "About Com" site shows you how to activate it (again, YouTube won't let me enter a url - so just google for " adding the developer tab in excel " . Spreadsheets About Com (second link from top) has a very good 5 second tutorial.

in Excel for Mac, the procedure described for inserting a second bubble chart without any data being highlighted, results in an error message "some chart types cannot be combined with other chart types. Select a different chart type

Clever work around for the missing functionality of Excel charts

This was very helpful - however with 90 items I did not want to enter things manually. I found the following Windows Help side where you can simply copy paste the VB (Visual Basic) instructions and the code for the "adding labels' macro. Then you just hit 'Run' and it will add the labels.
