'Adversaries are seizing on U.S. internal polarization': Expert warns of growing disinformation

Iran is reportedly ramping up efforts to influence U.S. public opinion ahead of the upcoming election, targeting the campaigns of Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Karim Sadjadpour, joins Morning Joe to discuss how Iran’s cyber activities aim to exploit internal polarization, following tactics used by Russia in past elections.

Political polarization is enabled by the primitive voting methods used by the world's democracies, which count only one majority (or plurality).
And polarization is probably inevitable when the partisan primary elections system is added on, because the voters most motivated to turn out to vote in a party's primary election are the party's most ideological voters. Also, voters in primary elections don't see as much reason to vote for a "compromise" who's more likely to win the general election that's many months away.
Democracies could quickly end polarization by switching to a voting method that counts all of the head-to-head majorities. It would create a strong incentive for politicians to support majority-preferred policies, on many more issues. With voting methods that count only one majority (or one plurality), the majority (or plurality) that gets counted can often be a coalition of minorities on different issues, which undermines politicians' incentive to support majority-preferred policies.
