A U.S. airman has died after setting himself on fire outside the Israel embassy in Washington in a reported protest against the war in Gaza. NBC’s Raf Sanchez reports for TODAY.

He wrote his last message on Facebook: "Many of us like to ask ourselves, 'What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?' The answer is, you're doing it. Right now."

Before setting himself on fire, he said he would "no longer be complicit in genocide" and that he was "about to engage in an extreme act of protest." He continued that his extreme act was no worse than people in Palestine had been going thru, and that he rejects the new standard the ruling class had set as normal.

He was marching towards martyrdom with a firm mission showing unconditional determination and courage. Without hesitation, he put the live camera, walked in front several feet away, unflinching he poured fuel even onto his head and face he stood as a pillar of strength and he meant business, he stood and stood as the fire engulfed him in a horrific scene he never wished upon others. After setting himself on fire, he yelled "free Palestine" repeatedly 4 to 5 times while grasping for breath and at the end screamed until he no longer could and melted to the ground still on
