[Have you ever experienced performance anxiety? Do your nerves tend to overtake you before any big sporting event or other public performance?

Many people are challenged with debilitating performance anxiety, and one of our listeners recently wrote in to ask that we cover a special episode on the topic. So, today we’ll be discussing some powerful tools to help you rid yourself of the nerves and bring your performance to a whole new level!

Now, for those of you who may be thinking that a sports discussion really isn’t for you, hold tight—the tools we use to combat performance anxiety can also be used for combatting difficulties with things like public speaking and voicing your opinions effectively at work.

No matter what anxiety issues you may be experiencing in public, you will probably benefit from this discussion.

So, what’s the big deal about “game day” anyway? Why do we let ourselves get so worked up about it? Instinctively, we understand what it is that makes us so nervous, but it can be hard to put it into words. As a teenager, I remember dreading game day: events were scheduled during the day, as opposed to the evenings when we practiced, which felt awkward to me physically; and the coaches and other players would get so worked up that they’d be yelling at each other (and me) aggressively, which felt awful to me mentally and emotionally. When we take an objective glance at this scenario, it’s not hard to grasp what would cause it to be anxiety-inducing for most people.

All of the obstacles above ultimately point to one thing: approval anxiety.]

Self judgment is worst. I am way too hard on my self, I don't care that much od judgment of others tho.., hate that feeling that comes on (anxiety) of performance failure..

I recently had a really bad practice when trying out for a higher level team. I got tense, nervous, and started to make some big mistakes. When this happened I became worried about what the coach and team members would think about me. After watching this video it really help me to understand wanting approval of other people and how to use reverse visualization. This video has helped reduce my anxiety. Thanks!

I’m mostly afraid of teammates judging me and yelling at me for messing up. Or making fun of me because of my size and strength. But this video really helped me! Like you said, it is all just the game and not the complete end of the world.

This video has helped me massively. I’ve always struggled to bring my A game to snooker matches, no matter how well I play i practice. I’ve visualised my nightmare scenario, accepted it doesn’t change me, now I bring my practice game to the match table. Brilliant!

3:00 minutes in and I’ve already shed a tear because I’ve never thought of performance anxiety as approval anxiety. But it makes so much sense I want so badly to make my family proud and gain there approval. I think if I can get over this anxiety I can reach the next level. Thanks so much this has really helped me

After having a coach that discouraged her players regularly, I have been struggling to regain my confidence in playing lacrosse. I'm a really good player when I'm practicing in my backyard, however, when it's time for practice with my new team I get anxious because I want to prove myself to my new coach. I came upon this video and found it extremely useful! I hope to use these tips before my next practice.

When I practise soccer, i juggle well, i have good control and overall average physique. But in match I just get locked when confronting a player, I'll try your techniques next time before the match.

This really helped a lot man. I’m a sophomore playing on varsity football because of my size. I was really freaking out about games to the point where I couldn’t breathe before them. I only have 2 more months until it’s done. Thank god

I love that you used soccer as your main focus because that is exactly why i came here. When you said "Performance anxiety is approval anxiety, " I really felt that and it made me realize my problem. Thank you!

My friends say when I play I have a look on the face of clueless because I don't want the ball because I'm afraid I'm gonna miss or let my teammates down or get criticized but this video told me that I gotta believe in myself and trashtalk can help because that can get in your opponents head

3 years ago, i developped performance anxiety at work. it transformed into depression. I got back on my feet... but this year, performance anxiety came back in another context : coaching a boys soccer team. I fear not being good enough for them, for the parents, for the "directeur i really got to practise this reverse-visualisation thing. thanks!
