REMEMBER the BA 777 crashing at Heathrow?! #shorts

Do you remember the crash landing of BA flight 38 at Heathrow airport?
The British Airways 777 was a scheduled flight from Beijing to London. In January 2008, the flight crashed just short of the runway while landing at Heathrow after both engines lacked in power two miles before touchdown. Fortunately, everyone made it out safely.
Ice crystals in the jet fuel clogged the fuel-oil heat exchanger, which sits prior to each engine. The restricted fuel flow led to a reduced power output, resulting in a loss of speed and altitude. The pilots reacted perfectly and retracted flaps by one step to reduce the drag and increase the speed again. Still, the plane landed 890 feet short of the runway.
This accident led to all 777 fitted with Rolls Royce engines having to modify their Fuel-oil heat exchangers.
Now you know! Like and follow for more aviation facts every day.

I remember the pilot being blamed by many people. The pilots did a great job. Shame on the media and others.

Fun fact: after test pilots reproduced the flight in the sim, none of them managed to glide further than the pilots did that day.

I do remember that day just like yesterday. We were on Qatar Airways right behind BA scheduled landing in Heathrow airport. We flew over London more than an hr and half before landing in Gatwick airport. We lost our connecting flight to Chicago. We flew out of London the following morning. What day! Thanks for sharing this with us. Best.

It's incredibly astonishing that there was not a single fatality. Just injuries! W to the pilots.on the deck

Glad everyone made it out safely. Watch a lot of plane crash documentaries and it's the first time hearing of this.

It is super interesting how everything in a plane has been optimized after something previously failed

The captain of that plane is actually my dad, his name is Peter Burkill, and even when he saved people on that plane my dad lost his job and got heavily criticised by the press. It was only till years later when they uncovered the truth about the crash and that my dad saved everyone. Even after doing his job perfectly he never got the recognition he deserved, it’s actually quite sad

This cockpit was sold to a flight simulator manufacturer and majority of the parts were reused!

Hey Captain Joe, always a great channel, thank you. This recent fad of “shorts” don’t do you justice. Your in-depth full lengths are a million times better and appeal to followers with a slightly longer attention span! 😉.

Ex Heathrow firefighter here. Green watch were on that day and my watch (Red) were on nights, on change over we took over babysitting duties of the accident site. Such a surreal site

Yes, I remember this crash. I remember seeing it on the news and I remember it took what seemed like a long time before the cause of the crash was determined.

I remember it very well. I was working at LHR at the time. Amazing to see. Fantastic flying by BA pilots.
