A serious question about the nature of agnosticism and why I don't fit into most of the common definitions.

The word you are looking for is apistevist, one who rejects faith as a basis for knowledge or truth. The Greek word gnosis does not refer to knowledge in general, but to personal knowledge. It is not an externally verifiable fact of something, but rather the sense of confidence you have about something. In a religious context, gnosis means spiritual knowledge, and is definitely distinct from intellectual knowledge. So, being agnostic (without a feeling of confidence about the existence of god) or atheistic (without a belief in god) are actually the same thing.

The real battle we atheists have is what you mentioned, that agnostic is not some middle ground between theistic and atheistic. From my experience, most people who say they are agnostic mean "I don't give a shit, so don't drag me into it."
