Convert Food Waste Into FREE Cooking Fuel

One of our favorite systems here at Acorn Land Labs in the HomeBioGas methane digester System. HomeBioGas is a company based in Israel that focuses on creating systems that convert food waste into free energy (methane fuel) and liquid fertilizer. We feed our HomeBioGas system 1-2 buckets of food scraps every few days.

This gives us up to 2 hours of clean burning methane fuel for our grill-top burner on the back deck. We could run this burner indoors if we drilled a gas line hole in the wall. We also get a few gallons of nutrient rich liquid fertilizer every few days. We use the liquid fertilizer to grow more produce in our gardens. This system pays for itself in a few years by eliminating our need to purchase propane and by providing us with free fertilizer for the garden.

The HomeBioGas system even has an optional flush toilet. This methane digester is able to process human waste in an off-grid setting. In this case, you would direct the liquids into a wood chip leach field (similar to a septic tank). You should not directly use human waste to fertilize produce for safety reasons.

You can however plant fruit trees, bamboo, comfrey, or berry bushes over the drain field. Anything with woody stems higher off the ground will prevent pathogen contamination from the ground (unlike leafy greens or veggie close to the ground).

I've been trying to make more people aware of biogas since I found out about it. Hopefully more people can use this cheap, renewable fuel. Who wouldn't want waste disposal, fertilizer, and energy

To maintain a more consistent temperature, you could make a phase change material that changes phase at 68°F and put it in containers under & around your biodigester.

I am FASCINATED with the biogas toilet 🚽 to hot water heater. I can see using this for a desert goat farm. This is used in desert mountain communities for years where septic was impossible to dig and pastures for cows are not realistic. I have seen them with insulation "jackets" on the tanks.

One question, can you expand on why the liquid fertilizers are not to be used on garden plants if the methane tank uses human manure to continue the methane process?

The main greenhouse gas is water vapor. The atmosphere is more affected by water molecules because the specific heat of water at 25 °C is 4, 181.3 J/kg·K, the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 1 Kelvin, and the reverse is necessary to reduce water temperature by 1 Kelvin. That’s more energy than most homes use in one day. Everyone is attacking the wrong greenhouse gases.

ive been considering something like this for a while, but my biggest concern would be 1. how bad is the smell 2. how would you empty/clean the bag if it gets too full if at all?

How does it work when you are away on vacation for a week? Or just don't use all the available daily gas for an extended period of time? Is there a pressure release valve releasing methane into the atmosphere, can the excess gas be burnt off, or can you pipe it into a stove that heats a thermal battery? Maybe I'm overthinking it, but I'm wary of the greenhouse potency of methane, and just letting energy go to waste in general.
