The antivirus and security software developers will hate me saying this... If you use common sense and know how to look out for any potential dangers, their software is not needed with Windows 10. For the rest of you that lack any common sense clicking on every link and downloading software from unreliable sources, YOU NEED 3RD PARTY ANTIVIRUS & SECURITY SOFTWARE!!!

Haven’t used anti virus software in 7-8 years now and have never had a single problem with viruses. I’ve had more problems with bad cables shutting down my system and forcing me to reinstall windows though..

To be honest, the rapid transformations in technology, does not guarantee safety no matter what you do, or use. You just have to be mindful of what sites you visit, what sites you download/install, what sites you open, and be very mindful of unwanted Microsoft updates by blocking them. I am an amateur computer user, at least 15 years now, and I have never had a virus. Plus, I have never purchased any third- party anti-virus software.

I haven't use an anti-virus program since 2001. No problems whatsoever so far.

21 years old, had my PC since I was 17/18, only had one trojan which immediately became detected and quarantined, I'm always tinkering around, it's hilarious how many people think they need AV, and I see 10x more problem with those who use them.

I stopped using 3rd party AV software for over a year now, and don't have any issues. 3rd party AVs would frequently mess with my games being able to run, and mess with certain peripheral drivers.

I manually set some firewall rules, have two popup blockers and strict rules on my Chrome browser, and only use Edge browser to stream my cable service. All my downloads go to different drives and needs permission before it can touch my Windows drive.

I use Malwarebytes just to do an occasional scan for crap.

I do what you do. I use WIndows Defender and a firewall. I also quit using google search and went to DuckDuckGo. I haven't used a third party antivirus in over 4 years and have never had an issue. I also keep all of my drivers up to date among other things.

Some browser extensions for security:
Windows Defender SmartScreen adds the same protection level of Microsoft Edge to other browsers (which is higher than chrome and firefox according to several tests).
Https anywhere makes sure that all your connections are encrypted (you can also block any unencrypted connections but that might be a bit annoying sometimes).
uBlock Origin is not only a good adblocker but you can also add filter lists that block dangerous sites and other annoying details of a website (for example the "share" buttons).

When I switched the folder control thing on, Adobe Lightroom Classic refused to use my catalogue so I switched it off again and Lightroom worked as normal, so bear in mind that this change may affect some apps.

Hi TechGumbo, I just wanted to add if you have the pro edition you can tweak the group policy settings and make any necessary changes to Windows Defender.

One of the best ways to stay safe is to use a good browser like Firefox with NoScript and uBlock 👌

Since W8 that I don't use an antivirus and since one of the early W10 updates I also got rid of Malwarebytes. Never had a problem.

I have been using my PC ever since I was 5 without using anti viruses. they are so annoying. but now I do use the built in for win since it's light and not as annoying.

You don't trust Yahoo!?

I prefer CLI for doing specific things. The command for turning off the Windows Update service is:
net stop wuauserv

Whereas the command for disabling said service is:
sc config wuauserv start= disabled

Put them in a Batch (.bat) file, and you can have both commands run sequentially by calling a single file.

Another tip is to set up your account as a user account and not an administration account, that will prevent unauthorized installs.

I have been using nothing but Windows Defender for years but my PC isn't my daily driver. I use my Mac for most things. Windows is just to run a few programs that won't run in OSX. The best protection you can have is a CURRENT system image and daily backups of files.
