Most Dangerous Ways To School: Vietnam

It’s still dark out. Two boys wait by the river. An hour later, further on down the Mỹ Thanh River, as the boat approaches the last stop, it’s filled with their schoolmates and the sun is out.

We are in Soc Trăng province in the Southern part of Vietnam. 250 children attend the local Elementary school where they study, sing, play, draw, and dream. But there’s still one child in every other household that can’t go to school because they have to help at home. It’s a vicious circle - each parent we spoke to wants a better life for their kids. But with no schooling, it’s impossible.

In spite of many hardships, some families are able to get their kids through school so that the dreams of becoming a teacher or a doctor or a football player, can come true.

Compared to some of the other films in this series these kids have it a bit easier but still tough because of poverty. Although travelling on boats is common in this area of my country, situations are much worse when natural disaster strikes, such as when there's flood. People lose their home, their families, let alone being able to go to school. The documentary was very eye opening even for me as I came from a different region of Vietnam
