Egg Sucking Leech

The Egg Sucking Leech, like most leeches, works great especially in still water. Somehow, I end up catching the most fish on these leech patterns.

Start with a hot orange bead behind the hook eye. I add eight to nine wraps of 0.020 lead wire right behind the bead. This will give the fly the dipping motion of a leech when stripped. After coating the hook to the bend with a layer of black thread, end with the thread right behind the lead wire wraps.

Add a black marabou tail that is at least the length of the hook shank. I tie it in right behind the lead. Next, I add a red marabou feather to match the length of the first. Finally, I add one more black marabou feather on top, so the red is sandwiched between two layers of black marabou.

Bring your thread to the hook bend, securing the marabou tail to the top center of the hook shank. Create a dubbing loop and then bring your thread back up to behind the bead. For the dubbing, I use a blend of black mohair and red flash. For me, I blend these together in a coffee grinder and keep a few packs to use on various flies. Take a healthy cloud of this dubbing and insert it into the dubbing loop. Twist the loop several times until the dubbing creates a tight rope. Wrap the dubbing, with touching wraps, up the hook shank to behind the bead.

Tie off your dubbing loop and remove any extra that remains. Stroke any errant fibers back, whip finish behind the bead and remove the thread. Last, use a dubbing brush to brush out some of the mohair and red flash dubbing. This fly will hunt.
